Ahrefs Free SEO Tools: Free Backlink and Keyword Checkers

Ahrefs offers a set of genuinely free SEO tools, headlined by its Free Backlink Checker (top 100 backlinks plus Domain Rating for any site) and free keyword tools including Keyword Generator and SERP Checker. Most free tools need no account, though Ahrefs' fuller free offering (Webmaster Tools / Starter) requires signup. Limits are strict — top-100 link caps, limited keyword rows — and full data needs a paid plan starting at the Lite tier.

What is Ahrefs Free SEO Tools?

Ahrefs runs one of the web's largest live backlink indexes, and its free tools open a window into it. The Free Backlink Checker shows any domain's Domain Rating, total backlinks, referring domains, and its top 100 backlinks with anchor text — enough to size up a competitor or vet a link prospect without paying.

Around it sits a practical free toolkit: Keyword Generator (up to 150 ideas across Google, YouTube, Bing, and Amazon), Keyword Difficulty Checker, SERP Checker (top-10 overview), and Website Authority Checker. Treat them as sampling tools with hard caps rather than replacements for the paid suite.

Main features

Free Backlink Checker
Domain Rating, backlink and referring-domain counts, plus the top 100 backlinks with anchors for any URL.
Website Authority Checker
Quick Domain Rating check — Ahrefs' 0–100 link-authority metric — for comparing sites at a glance.
Keyword Generator
Up to 150 keyword ideas with difficulty scores across Google, YouTube, Bing, and Amazon databases.
SERP Checker
Top-10 snapshot for a keyword with per-result Domain Rating, backlinks, and traffic estimates.
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free account)
Free Site Audit and Site Explorer data for websites you verify — the most generous free Ahrefs access.

Is Ahrefs Free SEO Tools free?

The web-based checkers are free without an account but capped (e.g. top 100 backlinks, limited keyword rows, limited runs per day from one IP). Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free with account verification but limited to your own sites. Full historical data, full backlink exports, and Content Explorer require a paid subscription. Check ahrefs.com/pricing for current plan details, which change over time.

The headline free checkers work without an account. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (site audits for your own sites) requires a free account with verification.

How to use Ahrefs Free SEO Tools

Go to ahrefs.com/free-seo-tools and open the Free Backlink Checker.
Enter a competitor's domain to see its Domain Rating and top 100 backlinks — note which sites link to them repeatedly.
Enter your own domain to benchmark your referring-domain count and spot your strongest existing links.
Use the Keyword Generator for seed ideas, then run the most commercial ones through the SERP Checker to judge difficulty.
If you own a site, sign up for Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, verify it, and run the free Site Audit for technical issues.

Advantages and limitations

Where it shines

Backlink data from one of the largest commercial indexes — far beyond typical free checkers.
No account needed for the headline tools.
Keyword tools cover YouTube and Amazon, not just Google.
Webmaster Tools gives verified owners genuinely useful free audits.

Where it falls short

Top-100 backlink cap hides the long tail of any serious link profile.
No historical data, alerts, or exports on the free tier.
Rate-limited per IP — heavy research sessions get throttled.
Domain Rating is Ahrefs' metric, not Google's; don't treat it as a ranking score.

Best use cases

Beginners
Check your site's Domain Rating monthly to watch link-building progress in one number.
Outreach builders
Mine competitors' top-100 backlinks for directories, podcasts, and resource pages that accept submissions.
Niche researchers
Run SERP Checker on target keywords to see whether top results are beatable low-authority pages.

Ahrefs Free SEO Tools FAQ

Is Ahrefs free?

Ahrefs is primarily a paid platform, but its free SEO tools (backlink checker, keyword generator, SERP checker) cost nothing, and Webmaster Tools is free for verified site owners. Full data requires a paid plan.

What is Domain Rating?

Domain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs' 0–100 score of a site's backlink strength, based on the quantity and quality of referring domains. It measures link profile strength, not Google rankings — a high-DR page can still rank poorly for irrelevant queries.

Why can I only see 100 backlinks?

The top-100 cap is the free tier's sampling limit. Complete backlink profiles with history and exports are paid features in Site Explorer.

Do I need an account for the free tools?

No for the web checkers. Yes (free) for Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, which requires verifying site ownership.
